We’re thrilled to share some exciting news! Rizome, the sister company of Bamboo Living and founded by our own co-founder and chief architect, David Sands, has been honored with the 2024 Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE) from the U.S. Department of State. Rizome was one of only six recipients chosen for this prestigious award, recognized specifically in the Climate Resilience category.
This accolade highlights Rizome’s groundbreaking efforts in the construction industry, where they are leading the way in using engineered bamboo as a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials like wood, steel, and concrete. Not only is this innovative material a game-changer for eco-friendly construction, but it also plays a pivotal role in reforesting areas devastated by irresponsible agricultural practices.
The ACE award, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, has long been a symbol of excellence for American companies that are making a positive impact on the world, advancing corporate social responsibility and driving meaningful change. This year’s recognition places Rizome among some of the most forward-thinking companies working to tackle global challenges like climate change.
David had the honor of accepting the award last month in Washington D.C. In his acceptance speech, he spoke passionately about the role bamboo can play in addressing the climate crisis. He highlighted how planting large, non-invasive bamboo forests can help sequester significant amounts of carbon dioxide, offering a viable climate solution. He also pointed out that adopting bamboo as a high-quality building material presents an opportunity to replace the wood, steel, and concrete that currently make up a large portion of the construction industry—materials that are responsible for about 25% of global carbon emissions.
David’s message was powerful and inspiring: “It’s no longer business as usual, it’s business as a climate solution and community upliftment, and that’s everybody’s business.”
